Solo Exibition of CY Hong, from 4/09~5/01

The Chinese characters “怪獸” literally means “monster”. It also refers to “beast”. However, in this series of painting named as ”monster”, it describes painter’s own physical and psychological conditions. The emotion of the painter swells incesantly to such a degree that he himself can not bear it any more, so he vents out his over-swollen passion on the canvas. By means of people’s normal vision and conscious function to appreciate the paintings, they gradually induce some kind of mood that looks like so familiar. It seemingly comes form the imagination of the past or a shared story.
Furthermore, it generates some kind of desire space needing to fill up endlessly.
By means of a self-portrait form, the monster in the works is firmly gazing at the souls in side of the viewer’s body and longer for echoes. In some way, this is a kind of thinking and the basis of artistic creation as well. It reflects the painter’s personal experiences and the process of facing the society’s whole consciousness. This unstopping collision and clash of the internal feeling and thinking become more personal and more crystal. And it constructs extremely personal and pent-up inside sound which is so hard to express. Once the background and form become simplified, they may make use of greatly impressive form to convey the painter’s state of mind which expects to shake the viewer’s deepest
primitive desire forever. And then it causes the viewer’s impulse to trace back to “ libido” which appears just like the waves in our minds.

Finally, the monster is to reach an awe-inspiring “ return back to primitiveness “ with waves after waves. Then it will humbly pray.

I have told Chi-Yao to choose arts as a career is a challenging task. Besides, it will be more difficult for a heavily hearing-disabled artist to communicate with others on holding an art exhibition. However, at the same time in my heart I expect his life experiences in hearing disability from childhood will be the training and course of study bestowed on him. His endeavor of breaking through lots of distress and wearies becomes catalyst and then transform it to the energy of artistic creation. Chi-Yao insists on his faith. After his college graduation, he has being marched forward to his dream. He ever wondered whether his insistence is correct or not. My response is that if he appropriately applies “ insistence “ at the right place, then it will become a kind of “strength and right timing “.

Chi-Yao’s mid-term aim is to act as an artistic worker in an art village and to devote himself as a medium in order to exchange ideas and comprehension with the artists in other countries of the world. Meanwhile, he thinks we should let Taiwan’s contemporary arts exhibit in every corner of the world and let the whole world know Taiwan ia teeming with people who whole-heartly embrace art aspiration and devote to it. In addition, Taiwan truly has this superior circumstances and timing. In my opinion, when Chi-Yao is marching toward his ideal; meanwhile, he has another expectation. He expects that with his persistent attitude to arts, he may encourage more young people to to face difficult conditions with brave, to consult with experienced ones and to realize their dreams without considering consequences or difficulties.

To insist one’s own ideal and to strive to pursue it make one feel kind of possessing lots of sense of achievement. This personal art exhibition is held according to my own thought and idea. To me, this is kind of painting and mind communication without any external bondage. Your stepping in this exhibition square is a great praise and support to me. I sincerely welcome you, your family members, friends ,and
relatives to come here to listen to what the paintings are going to convey to you. This is the first time I plan such an exhibition. It may involve some flaws and immaturity. I sincerely welcome your comments any time.
